Moms Demand Action is a gender-inclusive organization dedicated to combating gun violence. It was founded after the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012. Local leader Kristin Bowen is committed to her volunteer work with Moms Demand Action. Prior to the election, she worked with the organization to help elect gun safety candidates. As Bowen said, “I can’t sit still and do nothing after the Sandy Hook mass shooting happened.” To raise awareness of gun safety, Moms Demand Action present at the Fall Festival, Pride Fest, and Homecoming Parade. They also engaged in canvassing, phone banking, and knocking on doors to talk about electing gun safety candidates. "We don’t have to live this way," Bowen said. "Everyone's going to be impacted by gun violence, and every situation is made more serious by gun violence, whether it's mass shootings in schools, domestic violence, or other tragedies. Not everyone in this country needs a gun." The organization also supports gun violence survivors and seeks alternative ways to respect the Second Amendment while making communities safer. The work at Moms Demand Action can be emotionally draining, but Bowen is grateful for the dedicated volunteers who help share the burden. “It is important to step back and focus on your own life,” Bowen said.
